Create a home gym with these 10 pieces of equipment
Sometimes going to the gym can be a pain—driving through traffic to get there, battling with other people over the equipment, and that music that they play? Not your jam. You’d love to get your workout done at home, but those big machines, like treadmills, rowing machines, or lifting cages are just so expensive!
Cue the low-cost at-home gym. With these 10 pieces of equipment, you can create hundreds of full-body workouts, from cardio to core, in the comfort of your own home, without breaking the bank.
1.Resistance bands. Resistance bands allow you to add light strength-training into your workout, without all the bulk of big machines. You can do a full body workout with just these bands, incorporating them into exercises like bicep curls, shoulder presses, squats, leg presses, and tricep extensions.
2.TRX suspension system. Similar to resistance bands, this suspension system will strengthen and build muscle, as well as improving stability and flexibility. You can hook it to a door, rafter, beam, or even a tree branch, to create an affordable, full-body exercise machine.
3.Exercise ball. Exercise balls are a cheap way to add fun and variety to your at-home core workouts. Not only does working out with ball provide a plethora of ab and back exercises, but it also challenges your body’s stability and balance, creating a full-body workout.
4.Yoga mat. This versatile piece of equipment isn’t just for your vinyasa flow (though it’s essential for that, too). You can also use your mat for some extra cushion during ab workouts or basic stretching.
5.Kettlebells. Ever since these kettle-shaped weights entered into the fitness world, workout gurus have been singing their praises. Kettlebell training uses whole-body movement exercises, creating a safer and more holistic workout, rather than isolating muscle groups with machines.
6.Pull-up bar. Install one of these bad boys onto a door frame, and you can add a whole array of back and biceps exercises into your at-home workout, like pull-ups and chin-ups.
7.Step platform. This piece of equipment is ideal for cardio workouts that tone calves and other leg muscles. Plus, you can also use it as a bench for dumbbell chest presses. Look for one with multiple risers to adjust the difficulty of your workout over time.
8.Adjustable dumbbells. Rather than buying a full set of dumbbells (which take up quite a lot of space) look for adjustable dumbbells, which allow you to add or subtract weight to one piece of equipment, so that you can use it for anything from 5-pound lateral raises to 50-pound bench presses.
9.Jump rope. Jumping rope isn’t just for school kids anymore. This powerhouse aerobic exercise is a great, cheap alternative to investing in a treadmill or elliptical machine. The American Council for Fitness even states that it can increase body awareness and hand-eye coordination.
10.Balance board. Balance boards are a challenging at-home workout that targets your core while increasing your balance and flexibility. There’s a variety of different exercises you can do to up the ante over time.
