Theatre performance celebrates Deaf Awareness Week

Theatre performance celebrates Deaf Awareness Week.

Quincy University kicked off Deaf Awareness Week by partnering with the Quincy Community Theatre.

The show, "Our Town", features deaf community member, Aren Williams, as Howie Newsome.

QU graduate Jessica Lewis was able to interpret a special performance of the show Sunday afternoon for deaf and partially deaf audience members.

Audience member Aaron Mohr explains how he's able to enjoy the performing arts despite his disability.

"With an interpreter I can understand everything easily and I can follow the interpreter, and it's great. Without an interpreter it's just tough," said Mohr.

Deaf Awareness week continues with "American Sign Language Only Monday".

QU students are asked to use sign language only, all day in their classes and in conversation.

Here's a list of upcoming events for Deaf Awareness Week:

  • Monday September 25 - Silent Supper at The Abbey at 5:30 p.m.
  • Friday September 29 - Quincy 911 Dispatch Office Tour at 9:00 and 10:00 a.m.
  • Saturday September 30 - QU Homecoming Game at 12:30 p.m.
