Education is an especially challenging time right now.

But Quincy educator Brenda Stalder, with a special passion for teaching...is going above and beyond to create a special understanding of her students.

KHQA and our sponsors, Continental Cement, Green America Recycling, and Doors 'N More are proud to once again award an excellent educator through our One Class at a Time initiative.

Stalder is this month's one thousand dollar grant winner and she knows exactly how she will spend the grant money for her students.

Stalder and her staff say student needs continue to change and evolve. Which is why they say it's important to have books that reflect those needs.

We are working on incorporating more diverse books in our classroom so kids can feel more represented by finding books that can relate to this situation and books that work with different identities that they can explore.

And Stalder's students are excited to see what new books will come into the classroom

Bella Greshan says I'm excited, I really hope that the books that she will get will have the representation that I hope they have.

Stalder already has some books in mind to purchase for her classroom.

They deal with different types of kids that grow up different communities so there is more of a wide range of different types of things represented. We will have different types of ethnicity ,sexual orientation, poverty level, body image issues, all those things will be addressed in the books.

Stalder says a group effort among teachers made the decision to incorporate more diverse books.

We wanted to really help the kids focus on an identity unit, where they look at identity of characters and what leads us to be who we are.

And it's teachers like Stalder who understand students' needs finding innovative ways to help them during some of the toughest years of their lives.

It will be nice to have different titles and access to things...I'm thankful for the community support.

Again KHQA would like to thank our sponsors, Continental Cement, Green America Recycling, and Doors 'N More for making there grants possible for local educators.

If you are a teacher and would like to apply for the grant you can do so at khqa.com.
