Planned Parenthood Voters of Iowa formally endorsed Democratic candidate Fred Hubbell for Iowa governor Thursday, calling him a "champion" for women's reproductive health.

“Since the 2016 elections, the Iowa legislature and Governor Reynolds have been on a rampage against out health, against reproductive rights and against our freedoms,” Erin Davison-Rippey, director of public affairs for Planned Parenthood of the Heartland state executive director of the political action committee Planned Parenthood Voters of Iowa. "We need a leader who supports reproductive health and rights, who supports to access to affordable care and will put a stop to the attacks on women's health," said Rippey.

Hubbell has been involved with Planned Parenthood for over 30 years, previously serving on the board of Planned Parenthood of the Heartland. He also helped the organization open a clinic in Dubuque, which has since closed.

“We need new leaders who will not only support women’s reproductive rights and sexual health but will be champions for our work and our mission," said Suzanna de Baca of Planned Parenthood of the Heartland. "Fred, Charlotte, the entire Hubbell family have always stood with us. They have been leaders, not just supporters. They have helped us to move forward.”

He has pledged to restore state dollars to Planned Parenthood and vows to get rid of the state’s privatized Medicaid system, which is part of the reason the PAC has given its support to Hubbell.

"It's time for leadership that's going to put people first," said Hubbell. "Rita Hart and I are 100% committed to restoring access to quality, affordable, accessible health care to all Iowans, especially women, all across our state."

Hubbell said Planned Parenthood provides "vital services for healthcare that Iowans need" like STD testing, cancer screenings and family planning services. He vowed to continue supporting the organization if elected to be the state's chief executive.

Spokesman for Republican Governor Kim Reynolds campaign responded to the endorsement saying in part: “Governor Reynolds is 100% pro life, and believes we should do everything we can to protect the unborn."
