The Salvation Army ministry preaches the gospel of Jesus Christ and meets his name without discrimination and our latest Hometown Hero embodies that mantra.
For 35 years, Patty Douglas has made herself a part of the Quincy community by working at the salvation army with fundraisers, family services, and the homeless shelter.
And for her years of service, Patty has been recognized as this month's Hometown Hero on behalf of our sponsors Helbing Autobody and Peters Heating and Air Conditioning.
For years, Matt Schmidt has been under the tutelage of Douglas and said her personable attitude makes her one of a kind.
"What I love about working with Patty is it's not a business relationship she has with people. She has a very personal relationship and I've seen her work with donors, and they treat her like a member of the family," said Schmidt.
For Schmidt, working hand-in-hand with a genuine soul like Patty brings the best out in everyone.
"Whatever the Salvation Army does for anybody, whether it's neighbors or community-wise she has always been at the forefront to make sure the needs are met," said Schmidt.
Dale Stevenson, an advisory board member said the goal would be met or exceeded when Douglas led the efforts.
"We have never missed a Christmas goal ever since she's been here. Everything she brings into the Salvation Army turns around the full force," said Stevenson.
Stevenson has known Patty for over 24 years and though a lot has changed at the Salvation Army and the City of Quincy, the one constant through it all has been Patty Douglas.
To honor Douglas, the Salvation Army threw her multiple retirement parties to celebrate her tremendous work over the years.
Though she admits that while the recognition is an honor, she has never done anything to receive an award.
"I just kind of do what I do every day and not thinking it's that big of a deal," said Douglas.
Douglas was awarded a proclamation by Quincy mayor kyle Moore and had coworkers share some of their most fond moments of her at her retirement party.
"I'm just overwhelmed by all of the kindness and the nice things people have said and the gifts they have given. And I'm so proud of my Hometown Hero award," said Douglas.
Douglas said that while she is retiring on the 30th, she will still volunteer her time to the salvation army.
