Learning by doing can play an important role in a child's development.

And a Hannibal educator is trying to incorporate that strategy into her classroom.

On behalf of our sponsors, Continental Cement, Green America Recycling, and Doors 'N More,

Melissa Lehman teaches 2nd and 3rd grade self contained special education at Veterans Elementary School in Hannibal.

I’m very excited to use this in our classroom," said Lehman. "I know my kids will love it and appreciate what we’ve been given. So we thank you so much for this.

She says support, one-on-one attention, and creative learning play a valuable role in her students' success in the classroom.

"A lot of my kids are visual learners and hands-on learners. So the more we can put in their hands, it works on fine motor skills such as learning letters, colors, shapes. So it works on a variety of skills" Lehman said.

Lehman plans to use her $1,000 One Class at a Time grant to buy more hands-on learning tools, toys, and sensory resources to help in her students learn. Lehman knows these items will help boost her students' creativity and hands-on learning.

"To see themselves as capable learners, sometimes when things are hard, we shut down," she said. "So this is a way they can look at them as games, toys instead of another learning activity. It’s not pencil to paper, but they are still learning and having fun."

Lehman checks all the boxes for passion, dedication, and creativity to help her students learn and succeed.

Once again, a big thanks to our sponsors Continental Cement, Green America Recycling, and Doors 'N More.
