NECAC provides assistance to cut down your home's energy costs

Engle said to consider cheap fixes around your home, like caulking and putting strips around windows and doorways to block the cold from outside, while keeping utility costs down on the inside.

The Northeast Missouri Community Action Corporation has energy savings opportunities for northeast Missouri as many will be cranking up the heat with this next round of winter weather.

"Front of my house is really good now, it is nice and warm," said Hannibal resident Josh Stealy.

Just four days ago, workers showed up at Stealy's house to help weather proof his home for years to come.

"They literally just tied my sons room up and replaced some of the broken windows and I can really tell a difference,” Stealy said.

NECAC's Weatherization Program serves more than 300 homes a year across 12 counties in northeast Missouri.

"It is minor stuff that I probably could have done,” Stealy explained. “But not really having all the know-how and all of the funds, it is so much help."

While the work seems minor, officials say the savings are major.

"We are talking about several hundred dollars a year, that’s significant,” said NECAC Spokesperson Brent Engle.

"There are lots of energy efficiency light bulbs out there on the market right now," said Engle.

Stealy said before the weatherization process began, his bill nearly tripled in cost last month.

"So, once they start doing the back of the house, we are really going to see drastic improvements,” Stealy concluded.

But he hopes that won’t be the case after crews finish up his home next week

"It’s a very elaborate and intensive type of project for an older home but it is going to save this family lots of money on utility bills for lots of years,” Engle said.

Engle encourages northeast Missouri residents to give NECAC a call to see if they qualify for the weatherization program. If someone is struggling to pay their electricity bill this winter, help is also available for that.
