Mt. Sterling correctional center investigation turned over to FBI
Lindsey Hess with the Illinois Department of Corrections confirms with KHQA that an investigation is taking place at the Western Illinois Correctional Center in Mt. Sterling.
On May 17th, an incident took place where one offender was airlifted to a regional hospital, placed in intensive care and has since died.
An investigation was immediately launched by the Illinois Department of Corrections and requested the assistance of the Illinois State Police.
The case has since been handed over to the FBI.
Several staff members at WICC have been placed on administrative leave.
Hess issued a statement Tuesday afternoon:
"The IDOC takes safety of staff and offenders seriously and any activity that compromises that is not tolerated."
