Midwest Academy owner suspect in sex abuse investigation

Midwest Academy owner suspect in sex abuse investigation. Reported Friday, Feb. 19, 2016.

The Director and Owner of Midwest Academy, a boarding school in Keokuk, is now a suspect in a sex abuse investigation.

According to court records that were released last Thursday, Ben Trane is a suspect in an investigation involving a 17-year-old student who attended the school.

Journalist Lee Rood has also been following the investigation.

She says they filed a petition to ask the state to release search warrant documents.

According to Rood, the documents released did not include the name of the student Trane is suspected of abusing.

However, it shows that computers, cameras, cellphones and other electronic items were seized during the raid of the school.

On the other hand, Lee County Attorney Michael Short discredits the motion to release documents.

He says it would be harmful to investigators, staff and students at the school.

KHQA reached out to Short for a comment but he declined.

Also under investigation is whether students held in seclusion rooms were billed for counseling and other services not provided.

KHQA has been covering this investigation since the beginning.
