Lee County in need of mentors for local schools
LEE COUNTY, IA —
The United Way of Lee County needs your help in recruiting literacy mentors for local elementary schools.
Reading proficiency by the third grade is the most important predictor of high school graduation and success. That is according to Campaign for Grade Level Reading and the United Way.
“Kindergarten through third grade, you learn how to read. And then after third grade you have to read in order to learn anything else. So if your reading is behind then everything else falls behind and it's really hard to catch up,” said Elsa Pietscher AmeriCorps Vista Literacy Coordinator.
Boyer says the United Way is in need of about 25 more mentors. Free training on how to be a mentor is provided by the United Way. Background checks are conducted for the safety of the children.
