HANNIBAL, Mo. (KHQA) — The role of a teacher is to prepare students for the proper assignments and tests. But a great teacher prepares students for school and life outside of the classroom, like our latest Hometown Hero.
Educators at Veterans Elementary School in Hannibal said Sherri Wiley embodies more than just teaching. They describe the intensive behavioral program coordinator as a well-respected colleague, best friend, and confidante.
"Sherri, to us, is a leader that is flexible, compassionate; she is also very strong. She helps guide us in all the roles that are needed."
Gretchen O'Bryan is an early intensive behavioral intervention (EIBI) special education teacher at Veterans Elementary. She said Wiley helps keep everyone sharp and on top of their game. "I trust her, her knowledge; we all rely on her for her support and her guidance."
Fellow EIBI paraprofessional Vona Heibel said she's in awe of Wiley's selfless nature. "Not only does she advocate for our kids, but she also advocates for us. Sometimes we don't always see the vision of where our kids are going, but she does a great job of opening up our minds."
Wiley's students, such as Titus Gauch, describe her hands-on approach as second to none. "Mrs. Sherri is nice because she works with me and she helps me with coloring and writing. I like her, she's my friend, and she gives me nice hugs."
Titus's peer, Ryder Conrad, feels the same way. "I like her."
Wiley's fulfillment doesn't come from awards; it comes from watching her students grow. "I just really enjoy helping students progress in all areas of their life. Predominately at school but with their language and motor and academics," she said.
Still, the Hometown Hero recognition does not go unnoticed.
"To come out to this and everyone that I work with at Veterans Elementary out here supporting me just means the world to me," said Wiley.
Congratulations to Sherri Wiley at Veterans Elementary in Hannibal.
We thank our Hometown Hero sponsors, Peters Heating and Air and Hilbing Autobody, for making this award possible.
