Heating your home safely this winter

Space Heater - KHQA

Below-freezing temperatures remain in the Tri-States, which could have more people reaching for their space heater.

It is a good reminder to not plug space heater into power strips.

They must always be plugged directly into a wall outlet.

Space heaters should also be placed away from beds and curtains and unplugged when not in use.

My best advice is to just read the instructions that it comes with," Lieutenant Andrew Wittler with Tri-Township Fire Department said. "Keep it three feet away from anything combustible. Plug it directly in to the outlet."

Don't ever think about using your oven to heat your home.

I would not suggest that," Wittler said. "An oven is used to cook food, not heat your home."

Tri-Township Fire Department also recommends maintaining all home heating elements throughout the winter.
