Fire pit safety

As the weather gets cooler, more bonfires and get togethers involving fire pits tend to happen.

Keep in mind, each Tri-State community likely has codes that you need to follow.

In Quincy, you are to have a water supply nearby at all times.

You are required to attend the fire at all times.

It's also a good idea to keep your fire pits and bonfires away from structures.

Also, make sure the fire is completely out before the festivities end.

"You want to put it out, you want to turn over every log. You want to soak everything and make sure it's completely out. Theoretically, you should be able to hold your hand over the coals and not feel any kind of heat dissapating from it whatsoever," says Chief Joe Henning.

Chief Joe Henning also says keep an eye on the wind.

Obviously, it's not a great idea to have a fire going on extremely winding days.
