UPDATED September 26th at 12:45 p.m.
According to an Associated Press article, the man had put his handgun in a vehicle when the child ran up and fired the shot.
The Sheriff called the incident a "freak accident".
Criminal charges are not expected but the information has been sent to the state's attorney's office for review.
On Monday evening at approximately 9 p.m., Adams County Sheriff Deputies responded to the 400 block of West Washington Street in Mendon for the report of an accidental shooting.
Deputies on scene located a male with a gunshot wound to his arm who was then transported to Blessing Hospital.
His injuries were non-life threatening.
According to Sheriff Brian VonderHaar, a 4-year-old child was responsible for the shooting.
"It only takes a split second for an instance like this to happen so it is a good reminder for everybody when you are having loaded firearms, you need to take a little extra caution. A little extra time," VonderHaar said.
The incident remains under investigation.
