On Monday around 8 p.m., the Canton R-V School District learned about a kindergarten student who may have been left sleeping on a bus owned by the district after the conclusion of the bus route at 4:20 p.m.
The parents of the student reported that the student was able to get out of the bus through the front exit and he walked 7-8 blocks to get to his family's home, where his mother found him around 4:45 p.m.
The District confirmed that the bus driver did not complete the required post-trip inspection of the bus and that the student was sleeping on the bus when the driver exited. The kindergarten student had been left unsupervised for 25 minutes after he woke up until the time he was found at home.
"The safety of our students is our number one priority at Canton R-V School District," said Superintendent Jesse Uhlmeyer. "Unfortunately, on March 11, one of our kindergarten students was unsupervised for approximately 25 minutes after falling asleep and being left on a district-owned school bus. The student was able to exit the bus and walked home, where he was later discovered by his mother. The District is cooperating fully with all outside agencies who are investigating this incident. Our bus drivers work very hard every day to care for our children and make sure that they arrive at their destination safely. After learning about the incident on March 11, the District has taken several steps to ensure that this situation does not occur in the future.”
This incident is under investigation.
