QUINCY, Ill. (KHQA) — Classrooms look a little different this year, but the passion to educate students remains the same.
KHQA and our sponsors, Continental Cement, Green America Recycling, and Doors 'N More are proud to once again award an excellent educator through our One Class at a Time initiative.
This month's winner is Canton R-V third grade teacher Carla Eagan.
The importance of reading inspired Eagan to apply for the One Class at a Time grant. She plans to use the $ 1,000 to buy books for her classroom.
"I want to buy some LIT book sets the kids can use, so we can do group reads, read aloud together from the same series or chapter book,, and in depth AL lessons that we can do together at school or at home." says Eagan
Currently the classroom is on a hybrid learning schedule so she only has half the kids in the classroom at a time several days a week.
"When I was thinking what this year might look like knowing that our learning plan would change weekly so I was trying to restructure my reading because reading it's so important in 3rd grade." says Eagan
Eagan says her current classroom library is about 10 years old and outdated. She hopes new, interesting stories will help inspire and motivate her students to read even more.
This is really going to help out so much because, I already have a list made. It’s been a wish list so thank you for making that wish come true." Eagan says.
KHQA spoke with a few of Eagan’s students who already had some ideas for books, which included Junie B Jones and Choose your Own Adventure.
Eagan knows this is a challenging year for all educators and appreciates the kindness of others helping her kids and classroom
"We appreciate your support. We can't do our job without the support of the community. It just warms my heart to be able to help my kids." says Eagan
Congratulations to our One Class at a Time winner. Tri-State educators can apply to receive for the $1,000 grant. as well.
Once again thanks to our Sponsors Door's in More, Green American Recycling, and Continental Cement.
