Charges filed in Wever, Iowa murder case

35-year-old Joseph Mayorga, Jr.

Lee County Sheriff's Office responded to a deceased person call at a park near Wever, Iowa on February 11, 2017.

A male subject, later identified as James Merlin Nelson, was found deceased and was killed by a single gunshot to the head.

Early into an investigation, 35-year-old Joseph Mayorga, Jr. became a suspect in Nelson's death.

On Friday, charges were filed on Mayorga for Murder in the First Degree, a class A felony.

If convicted, Murder in the First Degree carries a mandatory life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Mayorga was in custody shortly after the February shooting on unrelated charges.
