HANNIBAL, Mo. (KHQA) — UPDATE:
The stepfather who was critically injured in a Hannibal house fire died.
The Marion County Coroner, Richard Jones, said Jason Carpenter died at 3 p.m. on Thursday from smoke inhalation.
Carpenter died at the University of Missouri Hospital in Columbia, Missouri.
His two step-children 5-year-old son, Logan Shanks, and 6-year-old daughter, Summer Shanks, were pronounced dead at a Hannibal Regional Hospital on Thursday morning.
UPDATE:
The Hannibal Fire Department (HFD) on Thursday afternoon ruled the cause of a house fire, at 1800 Grace St., that claimed the lives of two children was unintentional.
The fire department did not say what started the fire.
The children's mother told KHQA News that her 5-year-old son, Logan Shanks, and 6-year-old daughter, Summer Shanks, both died.
The two children and their step-father were taken to Hannibal Regional Hospital because of the injuries they sustained in the fire.
Both children were pronounced deceased at the hospital by the Marion County Coroner’s office.
Their step-father Jason Carpenter is in critical condition.
Carpenter was transferred to University Of Missouri Hospital in Columbia for further treatment.

The Hannibal Fire Department pulled three victims out of a residential structure fire on Wednesday; one firefighter was injured during the incident.
At approximately 2:57 pm, the Hannibal Fire Department was dispatched to 1800 Grace Street for a report of a residential structure fire.
After arriving, responders reported flames showing from the front of the structure.
All stations responded with 11 on-duty crew members. 4 administrative staff and 7 off-duty firefighters also responded to the scene.
Firefighters entered the residence and were able to locate 3 victims which included 1 adult male and 2 adolescent children. All 3 victims were transported by Marion County Ambulance District to Hannibal Regional Hospital. 1 firefighter sustained a minor injury and was treated and released at Hannibal Regional Hospital.
The Missouri State Fire Marshall’s office and Hannibal Fire Department investigators were called to the scene. The Hannibal Police Department, Hannibal Board of Public Works, and Marion County Ambulance District assisted with the scene.
The incident is currently under investigation. The Hannibal Fire Department will release more details as they become available.
