Kirksville murder suspect's trial scheduled for May

    A trial date has now been set for a northeast Missouri man accused of fatally shooting his wife in the head almost two-and-a-half years ago.

    The trial for Danny Welte, 42, of Kirksville, was set this week for May 13, 2019, in Adair County Circuit Court.

    According to online court records, the trial is expected to last five days.

    Welte is charged with First-Degree Murder and Armed Criminal Action in the November 2016 death of his estranged wife. He has pleaded not guilty.

    Welte is accused of fatally shooting Echo Leanne Welte, 41, of Kirksville, in the back of the head during an argument in the parking lot of the Kirksville Days Inn.

    She was pronounced dead at the scene. Police say the murder weapon was a handgun.

    Welte has been held in the Adair County Law Enforcement Center on $1 million cash-only bond since the shooting.
