Hail does thousands of dollars' worth of damage to a fleet of law enforcement vehicles in northeast Missouri.

The storm struck on the evening of Saturday, May 6, 2023, damaging six pickups and SUVs owned by the Macon County Sheriff's Office.

Sheriff Kevin Shoemaker told KTVO he just got the estimates on Wednesday as he gets ready to get the vehicles repaired.

The damage total came to $30,600. Here is the breakdown of the individual estimates: $8,100; two at $7,500; $3,100; $2,400; $2,000.

Shoemaker said he plans to have the pickups and SUVs go to the body shop one at a time so the others can remain in use while a single one is being fixed.

Most of the hail damage was to the hoods and tops of the vehicles.

"Right here in Macon was probably the worst of it,” Shoemaker said. “We have several deputies who do live outside of town; however, the ones who do live here inside of town got the worst of the damage.

The hailstones that damaged the patrol vehicles were the size of golf balls. The sheriff said a few of them were even bigger than that.

The bright side of things is that the hail damage is covered by the county's insurance policy.
