Baseball player named KHQA Hometown Hero for mentoring Hannibal boy

Bailey Montgomery receives the KHQA Hometown Heroes award at last Thursday's Gem's home game. Bailey has been a mentor and friend to 10-year-old Dougie Brawley the last three years.

Bailey Montgomery bats right and throws right for Western Illinois University and The Quincy Gems.

What he also does right is make a Hannibal boy feel like a All-Star.

Three seasons of summer ball with three different teams is constant change but it's developed a friendship a 10-year-old boy says makes Bailey a hero.

"Just knowing Dougie will be here smiling just makes me happy and excited and grateful to play the game," Montgomery said.

"It's amazing . He pretends to be bailey. He has several players as friends but he pretends to be Bailey. Goes through the routine....Bailey is on his mind a lot," Dougie's mother Stephanie Brawley said.

We would like to thank our sponsors Hilbing Autobody and Peters Heating and Air Conditioning for making our hometown heroes series possible.
