Unification Bout: Missouri, Illinois softball stars take advantage of rare chance to go heads up

The 2013 Illinois vs. Missouri Senior Softball Salute will be held Sunday, July 7 at Harry Phillips Field in Quincy. The 10 th annual event will be a doubleheader of two seven-inning games at 5 p.m.

Coaching the Missouri team will be Adam Rung of Clark County, while David Motley of Western will coach the Illinois squad. Rung stepped down after last fallâ??s season to concentrate on his duties as head boys basketball and golf coach at Clark County. Rung led the Lady Indians to a Class 2 district championship game last fall before they lost to Palmyra. In his first season as head coach, Motley coached Western to its second straight Class 1A regional championship game. Motley will coach his daughter, Rachel, and teammates Jayme Brace and Amber Platt in the game.

Headlining the Illinois squad are McKinsey Vinyard and McKenzie Vose of Griggsville-Perry and Emily Hendricker of Brown County who led their teams to regional championships. Lindsay Hobson of Griggsville-Perry was also selected but will be unable to play because of an injury. Quincy all-stars include Hannah Reller of Quincy High School and Kassidy Gengenbacher and Aubrey Venvertloh of Quincy Notre Dame.

Six players with state tournament experience from last year will play for the Missouri team. Brianne Caldwell, Liz Stansberry and Alexis Van Nostrand were a part of Palmyraâ??s Class 2 state tournament fourth-place team, while Bailey Couch, Devin Gudehus and Mackenzie Hustead led Knox County to a fourth-place finish in the Class 1 state tournament.

The series began in 2004 and Missouri leads 10-8. Last yearâ??s doubleheader was the third straight split, with Missouri winning the opener 2-1 and Illinois taking the nightcap 8-7. Six of the nine doubleheaders have been splits. Sweeps have been recorded by Missouri in 2006 and 2010 and by Illinois in 2009.

Admission is $3 for adults and $1 for children. Harry Phillips Field is located at 12 th Street and Einhaus Road, a half-mile south of the intersection of 12 th Street and Highway 24.
