KHQA STUDENT ATHLETE OF THE WEEK PRESENTED BY SUBWAY, PETERS HEATING & AIR, AND CELL TECH
Kay Gieseke, Hannibal
Class Rank: 3/244
College: Drury University
Intended Major: Biology/Pre-Med
If you had to pick one word to describe Hannibal's Kay Gieseke, it might be 'coachable'. The gifted swimmer and outside hitter has always had the work ethic to improve, something she's helping to pass along.
"I help coach the younger Hannibal Hometown Hitters teams whenever they ask me, and I help younger swimmers work on their technique a little bit more. I like how they're so enthusiastic and ready to learn, and it makes me realize what a big part I get to play in helping them excel, too,"
Its hard to choose a better student-athlete to learn from - Kay is no stranger to all-conference or all-tourney awards. The time she takes with instructing is an important part of continuing similar success at Hannibal High.
"Its important because every kid needs help in a particular area, and the more you help them, the more they can excel, and the more they can be happy with what they're doing,"
And to know she's helping to shape future Pirates, that just makes it all the more worthwhile.
"I can look back and see that I helped them, and that they've done really good with their strokes and everything like that, or their hitting. It just gives me a sense of fulfillment that I was able to help them,"
She's set a great example as an athlete. Pair that with her classroom credentials, and its no surprise that the Drury University swim team is her next landing spot.
"I'm hoping to major in biology or pre-med, I'd like to be a chiropractor. I'm excited, I'm ready to take that next step and I'm ready to work hard to get where I'm hopefully going to be,"
