After a run to the postseason in 2011, the Bulldogs are riding high knowing they have what it takes to win games. The offensive threats of Greg Pitzer and Austin Rule will spell trouble for opponents in Steve Gschwender's new flexbone offense. On the defensive side of the ball, the Bulldogs are stacking up to be extremely stingy with returning all-conference OLB Dylan Smith and several other veterans at LB and in the secondary.
The biggest question facing this group is how the lines will be affected by graduation. Derek Keely and Tristan Castiglia are the anchors heading into 2012, but the challenge will be finding the right sophomores (none of whom have varsity experience) to fill the gaps. However, the underclassmen seemed to be fitting in well with the beginning of practice this week.
The Bulldogs do not have the luxury of time on their side when you look at their Week 1 opponent: South Shelby (Louisiana fell twice to the Cardinals in 2011, including a postseason game). This means that any bumps in the road regarding the new system must be in the rearview by the time the regular season rolls around. The Bulldogs will need to get it together quickly during August practice, but they gave no indication on Tuesday that they weren't more than capable of doing just that.
