2013 KHQA Barnstorm Tour: MONROE CITY PANTHERS

2013 KHQA BARNSTORM TOUR: MONROE CITY PANTHERS

There have been six different US Presidents since 1979......but just three Monroe City Head Football Coaches over that same 34 year span.

Suffice it to say, David Kirby has joined very select company in stepping up from his Assistant's position to sheppard the Panther Program this Fall; one of the hardest rookie gridiron gigs there is.

But on first blush, the amiable Southern Gentleman might just be the right blend of fire and fun to help rekindle the flame in Title Town.

Dylan Buckman: "Coach Kirby is a very good fit for this program. He is going to keep our intensity going as hard as he can. He's going to keep pushing us to our limits."

David Kirby: "I am extremely excited to have the opportunity to be the head football coach at Monroe City. Storied School. And I just look forward to bringing that tradition back to Monroe City."

Dylan Buckman: "He says every day he wants to kick our butts on Friday Nights so other teams don't have to."

There was far too much of that for anyone's liking last fall. The upshot of which is that Monroe City kids already have all that nasty "dues paying" garbage out of the way. And with a nucleus of 16 now season starters back and David Kirby's already familiar schemes established, progress should come quickly.

Grant O'Bryan: "It's really going to open things up. I know we have guys who can make plays to help me out. I am really just having fun with it so far."

David Kirby: "We are focusing in on the fundamentals of blocking and tackling. I think our Offensive Line has done a pretty good job of improvement. Hopefully we can continue to improve and see how it goes for us."

Assuming better play up front, the Panther offense promises to be very versatile. Grant O'Bryan looks infinitely more polished in his second season at Quarterback. He's got three quality targets to work to in 6'4" All Conference Wide Out Kyle Fulton, Speedster Jonathan Schuck, and promising Tight End Dylan Buckman. And a deep well of options to run the football this season.

Grant O'Bryan: "Oh no, we've got a lot of guys. Tariq Garner, Taylor Birt. Very fast and both can make plays. And it's fun throwing to a 6'4" kid in Kyle Fulton."

But the more pressing issue is cleaning up a defense that surrendered 31 points per game on average last season. It will start with a veteran Linebacking crew.
