Local student earns surprise educational investment
This week's Spirit of the Tri States report, brought to you by Green America Recycling and Continental Cement, takes us to Pittsfield, Illinois.
It is easy to see that Pittsfield High School senior Kristen Sibley strives to be a kind and giving teenager with big ambitions.
Kristen is organized, active in the community, an excellent student, a member of the math and quiz bowl teams, and active with Rotary Interact.
She is also the Section 13 President of the FFA.
There isn't much Kristen hasn't thought about when it comes to her future but even those with a plan can be surprised once in awhile.
Sibley was surprised on Wednesday with a full-ride scholarship to Columbia College in Columbia, Missouri. She was presented with a check that was made out for more than $90,000!
"Thank you, more than anything because it's obvious to me, whether it is to other people or not, that without them I would not be in this situation for sure. And their support and their kindness to me and encouraging remarks to me all the time really do make a difference," said Kristen.
It is a nice surprise for Kristen's father as well.
"Kristen's involved in a lot of things. Kristen's a person that excels are anything she does. Second's not good enough for Kristen, she gives everything 110% so it's something I would expect from Kristen," said Shane Sibley.
And while it was a surprise to Kristen to be awarded with Columbia College's highest academic scholarship, it did not happen without great effort on Kristen's part.
Now a local student has a bright future to look forward to, not looming debt.
