Will you pay more online? Chances are you will in Illinois

Making purchases online to avoid sales tax just got a bit harder in Illinois.

Governor Pat Quinn signed the Mainstreet Fairness Bill, also known as the "Amazon tax" Thursday that requires online retailers to collect sales tax on customer purchases.

This applies to retailers with an affiliate within the state borders.

For instance, an Illinois business might sell products through businesses generally don't charge state sales taxes. Illinois customers are supposed to pay it directly to the state, but they rarely do.

Proponents say the measure levels the playing field between online businesses and brick-and-mortar stores.

Opponents say it will drive business out of Illinois.
