A source within the Republican Party tells KHQA-TV's sister station in Peoria, HOI 19 News, that retiring 18th District Congressman Ray LaHood has accepted a post within Barack Obama's cabinet.
LaHood, a Republican, will serve as Secretary of Transportation.
The 63-year-old Peorian has held the 18th district seat since 1994.
LaHood serves on the powerful House Appropriations Committee, and was in the national spotlight when he presided over President Bill Clinton's impeachment vote.
Obama's transition team is expected to officially announce the appointment on Friday.
