GOP lawmakers calling for investigation into Fusion GPS

On Capitol Hill this week, there were renewed calls for the U.S. Dept of Justice to launch a new investigation.

“I think we need a special counsel to investigate the fusion GPS episode between the Democratic party, Mr. Steele and Russian operatives,” said Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) on Fox News Sunday.

Fusion GPS is the opposition research firm behind the now famous Russia dossier by Christopher Steele, which allegedly laid out connections between Russia and the Trump campaign. We now know it was funded in part by the DNC and the Clinton Campaign.

“There’s a major scandal here,” said Tom Fitton, President of the conservative watchdog group Judicial Watch, which has filed multiple lawsuits on this.

“The dossier that was used to target the Trump team we know was funded by Clinton. The question is, did the FBI use this dossier to spy on the incoming president and his people?” he said in an interview Thursday.

Some Republican lawmakers are now vowing to push Attorney General Jeff Sessions on this when he returns to capitol hill to testify next week.

“Hillary Clinton, James Comey, Loretta Lynch Fusion GPS. We’re going to be asking about why don't you appoint a special counsel to look into those issues as well,” said Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio).

But some Democrats charge it’s a ploy to distract from special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into members of President Trump’s campaign

“The fact that the Clinton campaign paid to collect information on their opponents is something that most campaigns do. We’ve seen reporting on a number of keys facts that have been corroborated or proven in that dossier,” said Rep Cicilline (D-R.I.) in an interview late last month.

The role of Russia has once again taken center stage as questions swirl about what exactly happened and who knew what when.
