WIU rugby players make court appearance in hazing case

Aidan Belcher, 21

One of the Western Illinois University Rugby players accused of hazing some of his team members appeared in McDonough County court Friday.

Lucas Sgarlata and five of his teammates; Jack Lord, 20; Kevin Campion, 22; Aidan Belcher, 21; Steven Scroeder, 20; and John Landes, 24, all face charges of hazing and providing alcohol to minors following a May 2nd incident that left a man unresponsive

The man had a dangerously high blood alcohol level according to authorities.

Police say it was the result of the rugby team forcing new players to drink large amounts of alcohol in a short time span.

A sixth player, Bradley Basala, 19, was also arrested in connection to the case.

Charges against him have since been dropped.

Sgarlata, Lord and Campion have all plead not guilty.

The university has suspended the club from all activities pending an outcome of the case.

Sgarlata's case was continued to August 25 at 10 a.m.
