Hannibal Expressway back on the table as option to solve Hwy 61 traffic
HANNIBAL, MO —
MoDOT and Marion County officials are once again considering a Hannibal Expressway as of Monday as a solution to HWY 61 traffic.
"The whole goal would be to ease the traffic pressure in Hannibal, just get it back to regular commuter/tourist traffic and then have the big trucks going around the city of Hannibal , avoiding the stop lights," says Lyndon Bode, Presiding Commissioner.
Unfortunately, traffic isn't the only thing that is slow on Highway 61. The Missouri Department of Transportation has faced challenges funding this project because it has other priorities.
Kevin James, MoDOT Assistant District Engineer, told KHQA that funding is the only reason the bypass has not happened.
"The amount of finding we have is just giving us barely enough to keep pace with what we have therefore we haven't improved or added to the system because that is more to maintain and upkeep"
Despite the news from MoDOT, Marion County Officials will continue to push for the bypass until it's in place.
MoDOT will start by fixing bridges and keeping up with the pavements but the bypass will not be forgotten.
