Veterans School kids collect food for the needy

More than 2,000 cans of food are sitting at the Douglass Community Center food pantry right now thanks to a local school.

Students and staff of Veterans Elementary School in Hannibal have been collecting non-perishable food items for about three weeks.

It's all part of the school being a Stephen Covey Seven Habits School.

The goal of the habits is to build leaders one habit at a time.

Staff here say learning to give back to the community is a great way to make a leader.

"Giving back to somebody else in need is a big part of it. Making sure you're not worried about yourself all the time, and there are other kids who really need things maybe more than what we do," Tina Seago a fifth grade teacher said.

Veteran's students and staff aren't done.

They are already planning a couple of more service projects for the future.

Pennies for Pets in February, and plans are to do something for National Autism Month in April.
