Chris Trone from Rushville arrived back home at around 12:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Trone finished Monday's Boston Marathon in 3 hours, 39 seconds.
He said he could have been in the danger zone if he would have been 20 minutes slower in the race.
Trone told KHQA Monday's range of emotions emulated a roller coaster.
"You go from surreal from that final run to the finish and people are just cheering, and it's an unbelievable experience only to have it changed in an instant," he said.
Trone has been running marathons for more than 30 years.
He said he has never experienced what he experienced Monday.
"As bad as the losses were, it could've been so much worse," Trone said. "A little more excitement than we expected, I'll tell you that."
Trone said his brother accompanied him in Boston but was not hurt.
