Tip leads police to transformers taken from condemned hospital

The Hannibal Board of Public Works located more than $25,000 in stolen equipment Tuesday.

The Hannibal Board of Public Works located more than $25,000 in stolen equipment Tuesday.

Transformers were taken from the recently condemned Saint Elizabeth Hospital at 109 Virginia Street.

An anonymous tip to police led BPW workers to their location.

They were in working order, but weren't currently being used in the condemned facility.

BPW line superintendent Jared Stewart said the transformers contain a lot of copper which is a popular stolen scrap metal.

A city building inspector recently condemned the vacant hospital. Hannibal firefighters responded to a report of smoke coming from the building last week.
