Three charged in Fort Madison shooting

Three people are charged in connection with a Fort Madison shooting.

Paul Wilkins, 22, of Burlington is charged with attempt to commit murder and first-degree robbery.

Heather Mears, 23, and Terrell Wilson, 20, both of Burlington, are charged with aiding and abetting first-degree robbery.

Wilkins is charged in the Monday shooting of Matthew Griffiths, 25. Neighbors discovered him shot in an alley in the 1400 block between Avenues F and G.

Witnesses reported that they saw a silver car leave the area after hearing gunshots.

Griffiths is recovering from his injuries at a hospital in Iowa City, Iowa.

Chief Bruce Niggemeyer said that Griffiths identified the three suspects. Griffiths is familiar with them, the chief said.

Griffiths was alert when emergency responders arrived at the scene. He slipped out of consciousness after they arrived.

He was originally taken to Fort Madison Community Hospital, but he was taken to Iowa by helicopter.

Officers were unable to identify Griffiths the night of the shooting because remained unconscious and didn't have any sort of identification with him.
