Sunday morning house fire leaves Fort Madison home a total loss

Fort Madison firefighters responded to an early morning house fire Sunday morning.

Crews were called to 1302 Avenue I around 4:30 a.m.

Fort Madison Fire Chief Joey Herren said the fire started on the rear side of the house in the kitchen.

He said two residents were home at the time of the fire. There were no injuries.

Herren said they are still investigating the cause of the fire, but it doesn't look suspicious. The house was a total loss. Herren said the owners do not have insurance on their home.

The fire was under control within 20 minutes of the firefighters arriving.
