Sheriff's office calls out grandparent scam

The Lewis County Sheriff's Office wants to warn you about a telephone scam that's hit the area.

The scammer acts as if they are a grandchild of an elderly resident.

The caller then reports they are incarcerated in some faraway place.

The victim then is advised to send bail money through Western Union.

Recently, a Canton woman was deceived and sent $1800.

A sheriff's office investigation has revealed the money is sent overseas and is impossible for local law enforcement to track who received the money or prosecute anyone.

Lewis County residents are reminded if they receive this type of call to hang up the phone. They should then contact family members to check on their grandchildren.

Anyone with questions should contact the Lewis County Sheriff's Office at 573-767-5287.
