"Safe room" planned for Fort Madison School

Courtesty of Fort Madison Daily Democrat

The Fort Madison School district will have an unusual addition to its newest school building.

According to the Daily Democrat, officials will receive one million dollars from FEMA to construct a safe room at its new fourth-through-eighth grade school facility.

The 7 thousand square-foot facility will have no windows, and will be able to withstand severe storms with up to 250 mile-per-hour winds, including projectiles.

It will shelter all of the school's 800 students and 120 staff members.
