Re-appointment of Quincy chiefs put on hold

The re-appointment of Quincy's police and fire chiefs has been put on hold for one week.

The re-appointment of Quincy's police and fire chiefs has been put on hold for one week.

Both Police Chief Rob Copley and Fire Chief Joe Henning were scheduled to be re-appointed by the Quincy City Council on Monday.

The re-appointments come from the recommendation of Quincy's fire and police commissioners, but the motion has been tabled until next Monday's meeting.

Alderman Mike Rein requested the motion. He says he'd like the council to hear from the commissioners first and learn how their recommendations are made.

"I wanted to give the aldermen an opportunity to learn from the police and fire commissioners, the basis for their recommendation and the criteria that they use," Rein said.

"We just haven't had that opportunity yet, so this allows us that opportunity. The mayor is going to work with the commissioners and have them attend our meeting next week. That will be a great opportunity for the city council," he added.

Rein stressed that his request is not based on the performance of the two chiefs, he merely wants the council to become more familiar with the re-appointment process.
