More than a hundred sorority and fraternity students at Quincy University are preparing for a color run to benefit one of their own this weekend.
On January 7, 2013 the QU campus experienced an event that is still having an impact today. Shannon Peters, a QU student and member of the Alpha Omicron Pi sorority, suffered a variety of severe injuries after getting hit by a car while crossing Chestnut St. You can read our original story here. Since then, new safety measures have taken effect around the QU campus.
Shannon is currently receiving care at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago and continues to make strides in her recovery.
"Shannon is doing really well. She's breathing on her own. She is back in Chicago and going through therapy," Jackie Pohlman, Peter's friend and QU junior said.
The Quincy University Panhellenic Council (which oversees Sorority Life) is sponsoring a Strides for Shannon 5K color run and 1 Mile color walk on Sunday, April 21 to raise money for Shannon's ongoing medical expenses. Throughout the race, volunteers from the Greek organizations will toss different colors of powder at the participants once they reach certain points along the course. The Quincy community is invited to participate in this student-led event and help support the Peters family.
"We just want to show support to her family, whether it be financially or emotionally. We are just rooting for her to get better and get back to us," Pohlman said.
The pre-registration fee for students is $25 and $30 for the public. Checks may be made payable to: Quincy University Panhellenic Association. Those who register before the 15th will receive a guaranteed t-shirt. On the day of the race, the fee for all participants is $35. Registration begins at 11 a.m. in the B-Lot Parking lot, located at 18th and Oak Street in front of the Health and Fitness center.
The 5K race begins at 12 p.m. and the 1 mile walk will start at 12:15 p.m. Participants will receive a light snack, beverages, and an entry into the post-race raffle. The event is sponsored by Quincy area businesses.
All proceeds go to the Friends of Shannon Peters Fund. Participating fraternity and sororities include Delta Tau Delta, Alpha Omicron Pi, and Phi Sigma Sigma. For more information, contact Carlee Bane at (815) 222-5834 email@example.com.
