Quincy School Board candidates face off at League of Women Voters forum

The League of Women Voters of Adams County sponsored a forum Tuesday, March 26 at 7 p.m. to inform voters leading up to the April 9 election.

The forum, at the Quincy University North Campus Auditorium at 18th and Seminary Road, featured eight candidates for the Quincy School Board.

Bobette Cawthon, Richard Jones, Ron McKenzie, Jamie Foster, K. Rollie Platt, Richard McNay, Sheldon Bailey and Sayeed Ali all responded to questions submitted by the panel and the public.

Each candidate spoke on the issues and challenges facing the district and what they would do to address them.

The candidates come from all different walks life but each said that they have a personal investment in this community and the quality of education available to its students.

League of Women Voters past president and current board member Iris Nelson says that forums like this are vitally import to help the public make an informed decision when they head to the polls.

"These are critical positions for dealing with issues we have today. So with all the candidates up there to answer the questions, they have an opportunity not only to listen but to ask their own questions and have them answered," Nelson said.

The panel included Mary Griffith of STARadio, Don Crim of the Quincy Herald-Whig and KHQA's very own Nora Baldner.
