The Quincy School Board approved a Physical Education waiver so that students will have more time for academics.
Tuesday night, the board held a special meeting to discuss the issue, hear from the public and vote on it.
Board member Jeff Mays said students need more time during the school day to meet state proficiencies in reading, math and science.
Tuesday's vote came despite pleas from physical education teachers who say P.E. compliments the learning process.
The board also heard from constituents who think the district is moving too fast with its future facilities plan.
"For me, we have talked about this so much," School Board President Stephanie Erwin said. "We have a lot of support so why not at least try in March to keep it moving forward. The longer we wait, the more things can cost."
The board will vote on whether to put a referendum on the March ballot at its next meeting December 18.
The board must decide on a plan, the amount of money that plan will require and how to fund it.
