Prison employee wounded breaking up fight

A member of the Corrections Emergency Response Team (CERT) at the Iowa State Penitentiary in Fort Madison was injured while attempting to intervene in an incident Monday morning.
The prison was placed on restricted movement Monday following fights and assaults involving eight offenders, according to a media release from the Iowa Department of Corrections.
Fred Scaletta with the Department of Corrections said in the release that the CERT member received a puncture wound to the right hand while attempting to intervene and was treated at Fort Madison Hospital for the injury.
The fights and assaults happened during a program designed to prepare offenders for their eventual release to general population from segregation status, according to the release.
