Pittsfield burglary leads to police chase; crash

A Pittsfield woman is in jail after she led police on a chase through the city on Tuesday.

Jodi A. Gerdeman is charged with residential burglary, fleeing to elude a police officer, reckless driving and other traffic violations after the incident Tuesday night.

Police received a call about 8:30 p.m. about a possible burglary at a home in the 800 block of North Orchard Street.

Shortly after investigators arrived, Gerdeman fled in the vehicle. Officers from the city police department and the Pike County Sheriff's Office gave chase for about a mile before Gerdeman crashed the vehicle.

Gerdeman struck a traffic control box with her vehicle coming to a rest on the steps of the First Baptist Church near the intersection South Memorial and West Washington Streets.

She refused medical treatment and was taken to jail.

â??This particular incident could have become very volatile quickly if not for the actions of the responding officer and those assisting law enforcement,â?? Pittsfield Police Chief Dennis Jennings said. â??Given the time of day and the current weather conditions, many individuals were out and about in the city yesterday evening. We are thankful this incident ended in the manner in which it did.â??

The investigation into the incident is still ongoing.
