Tue, 29 Apr 2008 20:29:19 GMT — Officially, Chief Illiniwek is gone, but a group of University of Illinois graduates who once portrayed the controversial mascot has selected a new one, just in case. The Council of Former Chiefs said Monday that they've picked Illinois junior Logan Ponce from St. Charles to be the next chief if the university relents on its decision to shelve the mascot. Ponce was the assistant chief in 2007 when the school decided to do away with the mascot. Some critics called the 80-year-old mascot a demeaning caricature, and the NCAA agreed, pressuring Illinois to act. U of I spokesman Tom Hardy says the university has no plans to reinstate Chief Illiniwek.
