Papa John's building okay after car impact, set to reopen

A Huntsville Illinois man lost control of his car early Monday morning and struck the Papa John's Pizza in the Steamboat Bend Shopping Center in Hannibal.

According to police, it was approximately 1:57 a.m. when reports said a PT Cruiser was headed west on West Ely at a high rate of speed when it attempted to turn into the shopping center parking lot and lost control hitting the building.

Witnesses told police that the driver and passenger of the car left the scene in another vehicle.

According to the police report, an investigation was begun and the driver, 22-year-old Gary J. Wiltermood, was arrested at approximately 2:55 a.m.

Wiltermood is charged with leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident, driving while intoxicated, reckless driving and resisting or interfering with an arrest.

Police say no injuries were reported but the passenger, a 25-year-old unnamed Hannibal woman, sought treatment at Hannibal Regional Hospital hours after the accident.

There was some damage to the front of the building, but a representative for Papa John's said they have plans to reopen later Monday afternoon.
