New details in Fort Madison officer-involved shooting

Ryan Swearingen, 27, was shot and killed by a Ft. Madison police officer early Sunday morning

Iowa's Division of Criminal Investigation is continuing an investigation into the August 3 officer-involved shooting that occurred in Fort Madison.

Wednesday DCI announced that the name of the officer involved is Karl Judd.

According to a news release, Officer Judd responded to a report at 1:45 a.m. about a person with a knife in the 1400 block of Avenue D and E.

The DCI reports that Ryan J. Swearingen, 27, fled the scene and after a short time confronted Officer Judd with a knife while exiting a closet inside 1527 Avenue E. That's when DCI says Officer Judd shot Swearingen, according to the report.

Swearingen was pronounced dead at the Fort Madison Community Hospital.

An autopsy was conducted by the Iowa Office of the State Medical Examiner in Ankeny, Iowa. According to the DCI report, Dr. Michele Catellier determined the cause of death was multiple gunshots.

Officer Judd has been placed on paid administrative leave.

The investigation is ongoing.
