A Mt. Sterling man was killed on Friday after he hit a deer while riding his motorcycle

A 52-year-old Mt. Sterling man was killed Friday afternoon while riding his motorcycle northeast of the Quad Cities.

According to the Rock Island County Sheriff's Department, William McQuigg was riding on Route 84 near the Rock Island and Whiteside County line shortly before 2 p.m.

A deer ran into the roadway, and McQuigg was unable to avoid a collision.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities said McQuigg was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

After an investigation, it was found that speed was not a factor.

Toxicology results are still pending.
