Money coming to Tri-States to promote clean rivers and lakes

Illinois and Missouri have been awarded money from the federal government to support recreational boating and clean water programs.

Missouri will receive $50,000 and Illinois will get $100,000 from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to promote the Clean Vessel Act program.

They are among 21 states receiving more than a total of $16 million as part of the program.

The money comes from taxes collected on the sale of fishing tackle, boat and fishing import duties, and motorboat and small engine fuel taxes.

The states will spend the money to purchase or upgrade septic waste pumps at marinas and to educate boaters on how to keep rivers and lakes clean.
