The Missouri Department of Transportation plans to reroute a section of Missouri Route 79 in northeast Missouri around an area prone to landslides.
The Hannibal Courier-Post reports that the project near Ashburn will cost about $3 million and will delay two bridge replacements on Route 79.
The Missouri Highway and Transportation Commission must still approve.
Work could begin later this spring and finish by late next year.
The cost of the project would mean that bridge replacement projects on Route 79 near Foley and Elsberry would be delayed a couple of years.
Engineers say both bridges are safe.
Two landslides have occurred in the past two years on Route 79 near Ashburn when a shifting hillside caused large fissures in the roadway.
